Delicious food and experience. Our meals were tasty and they had options for gluten free. Cute location with nice view of the tunnel. Friendly staff, I recommend for a nice dinner!
Overview
If you ever find yourself strolling through Karlshamn and craving fresh sushi, Sushi Maki | Bar & Restaurang at Christopher Schrödersgatan 2B, 374 36 Karlshamn, Sweden, is the kind of place that quietly wins you over. I’ve visited several times over the past year, both for quick weekday lunches and relaxed weekend dinners, and each experience has felt consistent, welcoming, and genuinely satisfying.
The first thing that stands out is the balance between a cozy diner atmosphere and the clean, modern feel you expect from a quality sushi bar. The location is easy to find in central Karlshamn, and once inside, you’re greeted by the subtle scent of seasoned rice and freshly sliced fish. It’s not overpowering-just enough to let you know the kitchen takes its craft seriously.
Let’s talk about the menu. You’ll find all the classics: salmon nigiri, tuna sashimi, crispy tempura rolls, and beautifully arranged maki combinations. There are also poke bowls and warm dishes for anyone in your group who isn’t in the mood for raw fish. During one visit, I ordered a mixed sushi platter with salmon, shrimp, and avocado rolls. The rice had the right texture-slightly firm yet tender-which is crucial. According to guidelines from the Japanese Culinary Academy, properly seasoned sushi rice should maintain structure without becoming sticky or dry. Here, that balance is spot on.
What impressed me most was the freshness of the ingredients. In Sweden, food safety standards are regulated by Livsmedelsverket, the Swedish Food Agency, which sets strict rules for handling raw fish. Knowing this adds a layer of confidence, but you can also taste the quality directly. The salmon is buttery and clean, the tuna vibrant in color, and the vegetables crisp. On one occasion, I asked the staff about their sourcing, and they explained that they work with reputable seafood suppliers who meet national safety standards. That transparency builds trust.
Service plays a big role in the overall experience. The team is friendly without being intrusive. During a busy Friday evening, I noticed how smoothly they handled takeout orders alongside dine-in guests. Orders were called out clearly, tables were cleaned promptly, and no one felt rushed. In many reviews online, customers highlight the consistent service and generous portions. From what I’ve seen, those comments are accurate.
Beyond sushi rolls and sashimi, the restaurant also functions as a bar. You can pair your meal with Japanese beer, a glass of wine, or even a simple soft drink. I once tried a light lager with a spicy tuna roll, and the crispness of the beer balanced the heat beautifully. It’s small details like this that elevate a meal from good to memorable.
Nutritionally, sushi can be a smart choice. Research published by the World Health Organization emphasizes the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like salmon and tuna. These nutrients support heart health and cognitive function. Of course, moderation matters, especially with soy sauce due to sodium content. Still, compared to many fast-food alternatives, a well-prepared sushi plate offers a balanced mix of protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates.
Another real-life example worth mentioning: I brought a friend who usually avoids seafood. She opted for a chicken teriyaki bowl instead. The chicken was tender, glazed with a sweet-savory sauce, and served over fluffy rice with fresh salad on the side. That flexibility in the menu makes the place suitable for families and mixed preferences.
No restaurant is perfect. During peak lunch hours, you might wait a bit longer for your order, especially if many takeout requests come in at once. However, in my experience, the wait has always been reasonable and the food arrives freshly prepared, not pre-made.
All in all, whether you’re planning a casual dinner, grabbing takeaway after work, or exploring local dining spots in Karlshamn, this sushi bar and restaurant delivers quality, freshness, and reliable service. The combination of well-crafted rolls, thoughtful presentation, and a relaxed setting makes it a standout choice in the area.

Great place to get a meal, felt a bit small and crowded with both seating and after hour, there looked to be a new girl serving and she didn't do a great job looked a bit sloppy but with some training she should be great, the food was delicious and nicely put up on the plate, just a little bit little sauce for what I ate. Ordered Superior Sake as a after dinner drink mostly because I have never tried it and was very fruity and flavour full, too sweet to be called whiskey, too bitter to be called wine. In total 4/5, small improvements needed like not making it feel crowded and staff training needed
Greeting from Denmark ???????? Eaten here twice. Great sushi Will definitely be back for more!
A must-visit restaurant in Karlshamn, Sweden: Sushi Maki! 9/10 personal rating!
Amazing food and the waitress was very nice and accommodating for a Scottish person!
This the better of the two sushi spots in Karlshamn. While the other spot.we had sushi gave us cans and tetra packs, this here spot had glasses (which you'd expect in a restaurant, right?). The restaurant was cosy and we'll furnished and the waitress was very friendly and helpful, yet a tiny bit forgetful. Long story short: great food, super service, lovely ambience and friendly staff.
I visited Maki restaurang for the first time, and it was honestly the best sushi I’ve eaten in Sweden. The fish was incredibly fresh, the rice perfectly seasoned, and every piece was beautifully presented and full of flavor. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Everything was perfect from start to finish. I will definitely be coming back and highly recommend it to anyone who loves great sushi.
Thank you for delicious food. Sushi Family Set was perfect choice. Best compliments to chef and staff!!! Tak so mycket! !!
Really delicious food in a nice relaxed atmosphere. We had the buffet which is a great mix of Thai/Asian foods and sushi, all perfectly cooked and delicious.
Very good vegetarian sushi and interesting beer selection to acconpany it. Not all tables had soy though, so take a quick look around on the other tables if you don't see it ;)
My first sushi experience! I asked like a total beginner what would suit me, and the food + service I got was awesome. Recommended!
